At the start of the war the 2nd Northamptonshire battalion were in Egypt but they soon returned to England where they joined 24 Brigade of 8th Division. The division landed in France on 6th November, 1914 and on 14th November 2nd Northamptonshire moved into the trenches for the first time when they took over the front line from Pont Logy to the Fleurbaix road near Estaires for five days. Here they came under shell fire and suffered over 20 casualties including Leonard Baldry who was killed on 19th November, the day the battalion was relieved.
